Not medical advice
Pack a Day is for curiosity and awareness. It does not diagnose, treat, or prevent anything, and it is no substitute for a doctor or a public-health authority. If you have a heart or lung condition, or the air near you is bad, follow local health guidance.
The cigarette number is an equivalence, not a count
The figure compares the long-term mortality risk of PM2.5 exposure to the risk of smoking, using Berkeley Earth's rule of about 22 µg/m³ per cigarette per day (from Pope et al. 2016). You are not literally smoking. Real cigarettes carry harms that this comparison leaves out, and everyone's body responds differently.
The air data may be off
Readings come from Open-Meteo and its underlying models. They can lag, differ from a nearby monitor, or be missing for remote places. Treat the number as a rough gauge, not a measurement of the air in your exact spot.
Use at your own risk
Pack a Day is provided as is, with no warranty. We are not liable for decisions made from what it shows.
